Learn: Integers & Negative Numbers

A quick, calm intro β€” then you choose when to climb.

The idea

Negatives live left of zero on the number line β€” right means β€œmore”, left means β€œless”. Adding steps right, subtracting steps left. Three rules cover the rest:

The rules:

  1. 1

Adding β€” same signs: add and keep the sign. Different signs: subtract the absolute values, then take the sign of the number farther from zero

  2. 2

Subtracting β€” add the opposite β€” aβˆ’b=a+(βˆ’b)a - b = a + (-b)aβˆ’b=a+(βˆ’b). Memory: keep the first number, change minus to plus, change the next sign

  3. 3

Multiplying & dividing β€” same signs give a positive. Different signs give a negative

Quick memory tips

  • Two β€œno”s make a β€œyes”: subtracting a negative becomes adding
  • Keep, change, change β€” the three-step recipe for any subtraction
  • Lost? Walk the number line: right is β€œmore”, left is β€œless”

Interactive Number Line Walk

Right = + (More) Β· Left = βˆ’ (Less)
← LEFT (Subtract)RIGHT (Add) β†’-6-5-4-3-2-10123456789Start (3)Land (8)
πŸ’‘

3βˆ’(βˆ’5)=3+5=83 - (-5) = 3 + 5 = 83βˆ’(βˆ’5)=3+5=8

The second minus flips your direction from left to RIGHT! Start at 3, jump 5 steps right to land on 8.

Worked example

Every step explained β€” why we do it, and what happens.

  1. 1
    3βˆ’(βˆ’5)3 - (-5)3βˆ’(βˆ’5)

Why: Read it out loud: β€œ3 minus a negative 5”. The minus in front of the bracket flips the βˆ’5 into +5 β€” two minus signs in a row cancel, like double β€œno” meaning β€œyes”.

What happens: The double negative becomes a plus.

  2. 2
    =3+5= 3 + 5=3+5

Why: Now it is plain addition β€” no traps left.

    What happens: 3 plus 5.

  3. 3
    =8= 8=8

Why: Check on the number line: start at 3 and move 5 steps right β€” you land on 8. Subtracting a negative moved us right.

What happens: 8 βœ“ β€” the flip worked.

Real-world example

Nuwara Eliya at 6 am reads βˆ’3 Β°C. By noon the temperature rises 11 Β°C, and that night it drops 15 Β°C. What is the temperature at night?

  1. 1
    βˆ’3+11=8-3 + 11 = 8βˆ’3+11=8

Why: Rising means moving right on the number line: start at βˆ’3 and count up 11 β†’ 8. The 11 first cancels the 3 below zero, then 8 more above.

    What happens: Noon: 8 Β°C.

  2. 2
    8βˆ’158 - 158βˆ’15

Why: Dropping means moving left β€” and this drop crosses zero.

What happens: Count down from 8.

  3. 3
    8βˆ’15=βˆ’78 - 15 = -78βˆ’15=βˆ’7

Why: 8 βˆ’ 8 = 0, then 7 more down β†’ βˆ’7. Below zero again, like the morning.

    What happens: Night: βˆ’7 Β°C.

  4. 4
    Trap:Β 15βˆ’8=7\text{Trap: } 15 - 8 = 7Trap:Β 15βˆ’8=7

Why: The glitch: β€œ15 βˆ’ 8” ignores the direction. We started above zero and fell through it, so the answer must be negative.

What happens: The sign matters: βˆ’7, not 7.

  5. 5
    βˆ’3+11βˆ’15=βˆ’7-3 + 11 - 15 = -7βˆ’3+11βˆ’15=βˆ’7

    Why: Run the whole day in one line: βˆ’3 + 11 βˆ’ 15 = 8 βˆ’ 15 = βˆ’7.

What happens: βˆ’7 Β°C βœ“ β€” negatives worked all day.

Common glitch

Two classic glitches:

1.Sign-rule mix-up

Wrong:(βˆ’3)Γ—(βˆ’2)=βˆ’6(-3) \times (-2) = -6(βˆ’3)Γ—(βˆ’2)=βˆ’6 β€” β€œminus times minus is minus”

Right:Same signs give a positive: (βˆ’3)Γ—(βˆ’2)=+6(-3) \times (-2) = +6(βˆ’3)Γ—(βˆ’2)=+6.

2.Subtracting a negative is not subtracting

Wrong:3βˆ’(βˆ’5)=3βˆ’5=βˆ’23 - (-5) = 3 - 5 = -23βˆ’(βˆ’5)=3βˆ’5=βˆ’2

Right:The double minus flips: 3βˆ’(βˆ’5)=3+5=83 - (-5) = 3 + 5 = 83βˆ’(βˆ’5)=3+5=8.
