Learn: Functions & Domain/Range

A quick, calm intro โ€” then you choose when to climb.

The idea

A function is a machine with one rule: one input goes in, exactly one output comes out. f(x)=2x+3f(x) = 2x + 3f(x)=2x+3 means "take x, double it, add 3." The domain is the list of allowed inputs; the range is every output the machine can produce.

Worked example

Every step explained โ€” why we do it, and what happens.

  1. 1
    f(x)=2x+3f(x) = 2x + 3f(x)=2x+3

Why: Read the rule out loud: "the machine takes x, doubles it, then adds 3." That is the whole function.

What happens: We know the recipe. Now feed it an input.

  2. 2
    f(4)=2(4)+3f(4) = 2(4) + 3f(4)=2(4)+3

Why: f(4) means "run 4 through the machine." Replace every x with 4 โ€” nothing else changes.

What happens: The input is now a real number, so the machine can start.

  3. 3
    =8+3= 8 + 3=8+3

    2 ร— 4 = 8 โ€” multiplication first.

  4. 4
    =11= 11=11

    8 + 3 = 11 โ€” the output.

  5. 5
    f(4)=11f(4) = 11f(4)=11

Why: Label the answer so anyone can read it back: "the function of 4 is 11."

What happens: 4 โ†’ 11. One input, one output โ€” the machine works.

Real-world example

A water tank starts with 100 litres, and a pump adds 40 litres every minute. Its volume follows the function f(t) = 40t + 100. How many minutes until the tank holds 340 litres?

  1. 1
    f(t)=40t+100f(t) = 40t + 100f(t)=40t+100

Why: Translate the story into function form: t is the input (minutes), and the rule is "40 litres per minute, plus the 100 already in the tank."

What happens: t is the input; f(t) is the volume.

  2. 2
    40t+100=34040t + 100 = 34040t+100=340

Why: We want the volume to be 340, so set the output equal to 340 and solve for the input.

What happens: Now it is a familiar balance equation.

  3. 3
    40t=24040t = 24040t=240

    Subtract 100 from both sides.

  4. 4
    t=6t = 6t=6

    Divide both sides by 40: 240 รท 40 = 6 minutes.

  5. 5
    f(6)=40(6)+100=340f(6) = 40(6) + 100 = 340f(6)=40(6)+100=340

Why: The check: run 6 back through the machine and see if it really outputs 340.

    What happens: 40 ร— 6 + 100 = 340 โœ“ โ€” after 6 minutes the tank holds exactly 340 litres.

  6. 6
    tโ‰ฅ0t \ge 0tโ‰ฅ0

Why: The domain: can t be negative? "Minus 2 minutes" makes no sense for a real tank.

What happens: Only inputs t โ‰ฅ 0 are allowed โ€” the domain protects the real-world meaning.

Common glitch

One classic glitch:

1.Feeding the machine an input it cannot handle

Wrong:Evaluating f(2)f(2)f(2) for f(x)=1xโˆ’2f(x) = \frac{1}{x - 2}f(x)=xโˆ’21โ€‹ โ€” division by zero, the machine crashes

Right:Check the domain first. x=2x = 2x=2 is not allowed, so it is not in the domain.
