Fraction Calculator

Two fractions, one operation. Axiom shows the common denominator, the work, and the reduced answer.

+

How to use this calculator

Enter each fraction as a whole-number numerator (top) and denominator (bottom), then choose +, −, ×, or ÷. Press Solve step-by-step to see the reduced answer, decimal approximation, and working; convert mixed numbers to improper fractions before entering them.

How the calculation works

For addition and subtraction, make the denominators match before combining the numerators. Multiplication combines the two numerators and the two denominators; division turns the second fraction upside down and multiplies. Finally, divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor to put the answer in simplest form.

Worked examples

  1. 1. Add fractions with different denominators

    For 1/2 + 1/3, enter 1, 2, 1, 3 and select +. Change both fractions to sixths: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6, approximately 0.8333333333.

  2. 2. Divide by a fraction

    For 3/4 ÷ 2/5, enter 3, 4, 2, 5 and select ÷. Multiply by the reciprocal: 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8 = 1 + 7/8, or 1.875.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter a mixed number like 1½?

Convert it first: 1½ = (1 × 2 + 1)/2 = 3/2. Enter 3 in the top field and 2 in the bottom field; there is no separate whole-number field.

Can I calculate with negative fractions?

Yes. Put the minus sign on the numerator or denominator. A negative denominator is moved into the numerator, so 1/−2 is treated as −1/2.

Why can a denominator not be zero?

A fraction means division by its denominator, and division by zero is undefined. You also cannot divide by a fraction whose numerator is zero.

Is the fraction answer exact or rounded?

The reduced fraction is exact within the supported safe-integer calculations. The decimal is rounded to 10 significant digits; use the fraction when your question asks for an exact answer. Decimal numerators and denominators are not supported.
